{The Fiction Guild Blog Tour} The Memory of You by Catherine West

Book Description:  Thirteen years ago, Natalie lost a part of herself when her twin sister died. Will traveling back to the family winery finally put the memory to rest, or will it completely destroy her?

When Natalie Mitchell learns her beloved grandfather has had a heart attack, she’s forced to return to their family-owned winery in Sonoma, something she never intended to do. She’s avoided her grandparents’ sprawling home and all its memories since the summer her sister died—the awful summer Natalie’s nightmares began. But the winery is failing, and Natalie’s father wants her to shut it down. As the majority shareholder, she has the power to do so.
And Natalie never says no to her father.
Tanner Collins, the vintner on Maoilios, is trying to salvage a bad season and put the Mitchell family’s winery back in business. When Natalie Mitchell shows up, Tanner sees his future about to be crushed. Natalie intends to close the gates, unless he can convince her otherwise. But the Natalie he remembers from childhood is long gone, and he’s not so sure he likes the woman she’s become. Still, the haunted look she wears hints at secrets he wants to unearth. He soon discovers that on the night her sister died, the real Natalie died too. And Tanner must do whatever it takes to resurrect her.
My Thoughts:  Catherine West is a brand new to me author.  After reading the back of the book I wasn't sure I wanted to read the novel.  Simply because Natalie's twin dies.  I just didn't want a sad story.
But, lo and behold, curiosity got the best of me and I cracked the cover. And began reading the first page.  That's where the author got me...hook, line and sinker. 😊
As I began reading about Natalie I felt her pain but, yet, I couldn't understand her need to not go back home.  Family is all you have so it seemed to me that Natalie was being somewhat selfish in fleeing from her family.  When someone dies, especially a child, everyone in the family feels the pain.
Anyway, this turned out not to be a sad story.  In fact, it was fairly modern and moved along well.
The crux of the story seems to be Natalie letting go and finding peace in the death of her twin.  Also, she comes to grip with life "issues."
A great read!

Heart of Ice (A Triple threat Novel) by Lis Wiehl and April Henry

Book Description:  Fans of James Patterson's Women's Murder Club books will find the same friendly crime-solving vibe in Wiehl and Henry's appealing third Triple Threat novel (after Hand of Fate) featuring federal prosecutor Allison Pierce, FBI special agent Nicole Hedges, and Portland, Ore., TV crime reporter Cassidy Shaw. At the Portland Fitness Center, Cassidy joins the boot camp class run by the beautiful instructor Elizabeth Avery, unaware that Elizabeth served time in a juvenile facility for two horrific crimes committed at age 13 when she was known as Sissy Hewsom. The icy sociopath has already had her fellow former inmate, firebug Joey Decicco, burn down the home of Sara McCloud, her gorgeous lawyer boyfriend's money-grubbing ex-wife, and Elizabeth now wants Sara and Sara's small son, Noah, dead. The authors smoothly bring together the various story lines, including a sharp subplot centered on Nic's breast cancer diagnosis. -- Publishers Weekly

My Review:  Lis Wiehl and April Henry have done it again!  A triple threat, triple home run of a read!  Having read Hand of Fate I couldn't wait to read Heart of Ice!
It you're new to the Triple Threat novels then let me introduce you to three friends:  Allison who is a prosecutor, Cassidy the TV news reporter and Nicole (Nic) the FBI agent.
Three close friends who love the Triple Threat Chocolate dessert!  They are once again involved in solving a case of arson and murder.
Then there are the subplots of this wonderful read:  Allison must confront here sister, Lindsay, and her drug addiction. Nicole (Nic) is faced with the possible breast cancer, surgeries and treatments, and Cassidy joins a boot camp class at her fitness center where she meets the instructor, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is the epitome of deviously beautiful.  But people only see the beautiful outside package.  Is Elizabeth a threat or is she merely a pawn in this ugly scheme?!?!
Nicole's courage to face an unbeatable enemy, cancer, is at.times. a real tear jerker!  Going through the process of a possible mastectomy brings the three friends closer.
Three strong, courageous ladies ready to meet the challenges thrown there way with a little romance to sweeten the day.
Each of the Triple Threat Novels are stand alone reads; however, they are rather addicting when you get to know these ladies and want to follow their lives.  If you enjoy reading mystery/suspense then you'll want to read this book!

When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner, David Catrow (illustrator)

Book Description:  From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. The assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.

Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.

My Thoughts:  As a book lover I know that books not only make great gifts but they can also open up hearts that may need mending.  With this in mind I remembered seeing this book but wasn't interested in it until a short little person about three years old came to our Nursery Sunday School class at church.  He is in foster care and no matter how much the teacher talked about God, he just wasn't "getting it."
So, when this book popped up on my screen I thought, That's it!
When I received the sweet book I was so excited to take it to the Nursery Class.  And I did!
I read it to the class and lo, and behold, that sweet little guy sat there in rapt attention.  Yes, books can hold a child's attention.  He loved that book.  After class I gave him the book to take home.  He smile and lipsed, God loves me.  And that, my friends, is why I love books!  Books talk when we can't.
This is a sweet book and with its rhyming and vivid illustrations the story does hold a child's attention.
This story is all bout a child finding his place in God's divine world...growing, reading, eating and playing.

{Fiction Guild Blog Tour} If I'm Found by Terri Blackstock

Book Description:  Is Dylan hunting Casey to prosecute her or protect her?
Casey Cox is still on the run, fleeing prosecution for a murder she didn’t commit. Dylan Roberts—her most relentless pursuer—is still on her trail, but his secret emails insist that he knows the truth and wants to help her. He’s let her escape before when he had her in his grasp, but trust doesn’t come easily.
As Casey works to collect evidence about the real murderers, she stumbles on another unbearable injustice: an abused child and a suicidal man who’s also been falsely accused. Casey risks her own safety to right this wrong and protect the little girl from her tormenters. But doing so is risky and just may result in her capture—and if she’s captured, she has no doubt she’ll be murdered before she ever steps foot in a jail.
My Thoughts:  First of all, I have waited and waited for this book!  😊
Secondly, it is the sequel to If I Run.   And thirdly, if Terri Blackstock has written I novel then I want to read it.
The reader MUST read the first book, If I Run, before reading this book, If I'm Found.  If the reader doesn't read the books in order a lot of the story won't make sense.
With that said . . .
You will remember from If I Run that Casey is running, literally.  But as she runs, hoping to find out the truth and trying to find out who set her up, she stumbles across another mystery.  It seems that wherever Casey runs, she is likely to run into people who are falsely accused.
And Casey is all about truth.  So she helps those in need.  Even when Dylan is hot on her trail.
I've wondered from the beginning is Dylan trying to help Casey or capture her so he can benefit?
Then there is the heart wrenching abuse of a little girl that has Casey once again in the throes of a precarious situation. And now I'll anxiously wait for book three.
This is quite a suspenseful read!  But o!so!good!

{The Fiction Guild Tour} The Illusionist's Apprentice by Kristy Cambron

Book Description:  Harry Houdini’s one-time apprentice holds fantastic secrets about the greatest illusionist in the world. But someone wants to claim them . . . or silence her before she can reveal them on her own.
Boston, 1926. Jenny “Wren” Lockhart is a bold eccentric—even for a female vaudevillian. As notorious for her inherited wealth and gentleman’s dress as she is for her unsavory upbringing in the back halls of a vaudeville theater, Wren lives in a world that challenges all manner of conventions.
In the months following Houdini’s death, Wren is drawn into a web of mystery surrounding a spiritualist by the name of Horace Stapleton, a man defamed by Houdini’s ardent debunking of fraudulent mystics in the years leading up to his death. But in a public illusion that goes terribly wrong, one man is dead and another stands charged with his murder. Though he’s known as one of her teacher’s greatest critics, Wren must decide to become the one thing she never wanted to be: Stapleton’s defender.
Forced to team up with the newly formed FBI, Wren races against time and an unknown enemy, all to prove the innocence of a hated man. In a world of illusion, of the vaudeville halls that showcase the flamboyant and the strange, Wren’s carefully constructed world threatens to collapse around her.

My Thoughts:  The first book that I read by Kristy Cambron was The Butterfly and the Violin (A Hidden Masterpiece Novel).  I enjoyed it so much and was delighted when I received this book, The Illusionist's Apprentice.
There is so much in this read!  The connection between Jenny aka. Wren and the FBI agent, Eliot, was well written.
The history  in this book was intriguing,  I'm not a history buff but I had heard some things about Houdini and found that Ms. Cambron brought out some interesting knowledge about is illusions.
I wasn't quite sure why Wren chose to dress in a man's suit, that just wasn't clear to me in the story.  But because of her life and because she is quite eccentric, I thought that maybe she didn't want to be noticed as a beautiful female. {Just a thought}  Being a woman in the early 1900's, especially in this profession wasn't well thought of, so I give Wren the benefit of the doubt.
The beauty of this story isn't just about illusionists but it's about the public illusion that goes terribly wrong and Wren must decide whether to stand up for right and help a hated man.
An interesting and quite elaborate story.
I loved it!

{Fiction Guild Tour} Some Small Magic (A Novel) by Billy Coffey

Book Description:  All Abel wants is a little bit of magic in his life. Enough money so his mom doesn’t cry at night. Healing for his broken body. And maybe a few answers about his past.
When Abel discovers letters to him from the father he believed dead, he wonders if magic has come to the hills of Mattingly, Virginia, after all. But not everything is as it seems.
With a lot of questions and a little bit of hope, Abel decides to run away to find the truth. But danger follows him from the moment he jumps his first boxcar, forcing Abel to rely on his simpleminded friend Willie—a man wanted for murder who knows more about truth than most—and a beautiful young woman they met on the train.
From Appalachia to the Tennessee wilds and through the Carolina mountains, the name of a single small town beckons: Fairhope. That is where Abel believes his magic lays. But will it be the sort that will bring a broken boy healing? And is it the magic that will one day lead him home?
My Thoughts:  I always have some trepidation about reading a novel written by an author I'm not familiar with.  To me opening up a new book and reading by a to.me.unknown.author is like going to a new dentist. 😁  I know, I take my books and dentist seriously.
So, not knowing what to expect from Mr. Coffey I began reading Some Small Miracle.  And was intrigued.
The story is fast paced, emotional and rather interesting.
What struck me most, though, was that this story is like reading about the South.  If you live in the South, you understand what I mean.  Southerners have a way of speaking and acting that is a whole different culture.
Abel, the main character, loves his mama.  And since money is tight he just wants to make life easier for her.
When Abel finds letters from his dead dad he decides to run away.  the one town that stays at the forefront of his mind is Fairhope.  He knows if he can just get there, he'll find the answers he needs.
When Abel jumps on that first Boxcar danger is his constant companion.  But he meets up with Willie who is simpleminded but knows more truth than most.
A most unusual journey and a most interesting read!

Meet the Author: I write about what I see and wrap a story around it, which often results in characters who realize stumbling through life is okay because it’s still moving forward. That seems appropriate, I think. In the end we’re all doing the best we can with what we have, smiling through the fear we face, and trying to find the beauty in life’s sameness. So I watch and I listen, and what doesn’t end up in a book will usually find its way to my blog, What I Learned Today.

The Heart-Shaped Life Daily Devotional: Choosing a Life of Steadfast Love One Day at a Time by Karen Moore

Book Description:  What if you could see the world through the lens of the heart moment by moment?

What if God inspired you to walk “heart first” into every life event and circumstance, no matter what it was?
What if love was your number one priority? Love of God, love of others, and love of yourself?

Inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:2: "If I had the gift of prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew everything about everything, but didn’t love others, what good would it do?" . . .the Heart-Shaped Life series will encourage you to live life “heart first.”

The Heart-Shaped Life Daily Devotional provides refreshing thoughts, prayers, and scripture selections to help you discover the best path to the good life. . .which is all about LOVE!

My Thoughts:  This year I've been looking for a daily devotional but it has been hard for me to find one that isn't geared to moms of young children or to younger women.  So, when I received this wonderful hardback devotional I was slightly skeptical at first.
When I opened it, I thought this is IT!  I have finally found the devotional book I've been looking for!
I love the simplicity of the pages.  No frills, just the date at the top of the page, the title of the devotional, a verse, a short devotional and then at the bottom of the page a short prayer.
I'm not frills and ruffles type of woman so this devotional fits me to a T.  I love this lovely book.  And the devotional are just right.  Not preachy but thought provoking.
This is one of those devotionals that makes a great Mother's Day gift or a lovely card for an individual on your prayer list.

Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal by Tyndale

Book Description:  Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal invites you to mix creative journaling and coloring into your personal time with God. Prayers that focus on topics such as being thankful, dealing with stress and heartache, caring for yourself and others, listening for God’s leading, and waiting patiently on Him will guide your thoughts and calm your spirit. Filled with more than 100 designs to color, plenty of space for journaling, and 40 needs-based prayers, Tranquility will help you express your devotion to God with your whole heart.

My Thoughts:  I love adult coloring books but I was wanting a devotional something more than just coloring.
So when I saw this lovely book I knew this was the one for me.
This lovely hardback book has pages for journaling and coloring.  There are also places to add your own drawings and ideas.
This is more of a devotional journal that includes different kinds of prayers for the reader to study and journal/write/draw.
Since the word tranquility means the quality or state of being tranquil; calm, tranquility is a great name for this journal because as the reader mediates of God's Word this is a time of personal reflection and writing.
This book helps to bring focus into my devotional time and the prayers, the designs and the pages to write on and draw make my creative juices flow.  This helps me to remember God's Word.
A wonderful book that makes a great gift or just a "card" for that special person in your life.

{Fiction Guild Tour} Written In Love (Amish Letters #1) by Kathleen Fuller

Book Description:  When a postal error creates pen pals of two young Amish people, can they put behind their past mistakes to see the bright future God has written for them?
Jalon Chupp has a past he isn’t proud to claim. He’s worked hard to overcome his youthful mistakes, and he has recommitted himself to his faith. When he receives a sweet note included in a piece of misdirected mail, he can’t help but write back. Soon, the letters he receives from Phoebe are the highlights of his days, and with a hopeful heart, he suggests they meet in person.
Phoebe, too, looks forward to every single one of Jalon’s letters. Living with her overbearing aunt, Phoebe doesn’t have too much to look forward to. But when Jalon suggests they meet, she panics—although she has shared some of the deepest longings of her heart with him, she hasn’t been entirely truthful about her past. But when Jalon shows up at her aunt’s doorstep, everything is revealed. And she can only pray he’ll forgive her for holding back the truth.
In order to reach beyond the errors of their pasts, both Phoebe and Jalon must put their faith in something—or Someone—bigger than either of them could pen.

My Thoughts:  Kathleen Fuller is one of my favorite authors.  And so I was quite excited to receive her newest book, Written in Love.
This story reminds me of what it was like to have a pen pal before computers came into play and when we actually received mail instead of email.
As luck would have it, Jalon Chupp receives a letter in his mailbox that is not intended for him.  But when he reads the sweet note from Phoebe he is inspired to write back to her. So, he does write her a letter.
Phoebe lives with quite an overbearing (to put it nicely) aunt. Actually her aunt is controlling and mean.  so, Phoebe's life is a bit dull.
Phoebe begins to look forward to Jalon's letters.  His letters become a lifeline for her.
Then Jalon wants to meet Phoebe.  Whoops!  This is where Jalon shows up, literally, on her aunt's doorstep to meet her.
Phoebe hasn't been quite as honest and up front with Jalon as he expected.
A sweet, witty story of perseverance, love and acceptance.
I enjoyed this pen pal book.

If you love clean romance and Amish stories, then this is the book for you.
